183 - Opening the Archives: Digital Tools for Democratising the Arts
What this challenge is about
Public archives – with their vast collections of manuscripts, letters, and artworks – are technically open to all, but there remain multiple barriers to engagement. The digitisation of archives and collections seemingly democratises art and heritage, but it also creates inequalities of its own and often results in passive audience participation. This Challenge tackles these issues by examining the potential of various digital tools to create online exhibitions in which audiences take control of their own ‘research journey’ in a manner that facilitates meaningful exploration and creative engagement. It will provide practical and methodological guidance for collections looking to sustain and share their digitised archives in real life settings.
