132 - Nurturing creativities in instrumental music education to engage all children and young people

What this challenge is about

This Challenge aims to delve into the perspectives of UK vocal and instrumental music teachers, as well as children and young individuals aged 8 to 18, regarding their definitions of creativity and how creativity can be further nurtured in vocal and instrumental music lessons. The study also seeks active collaboration with these participants, both educators and students, to co-create innovative teaching and learning methods that can enhance creativity in music education. Beginning with a pilot study in Northern Ireland, the project intends to establish a strong methodological foundation applicable to all four nations of the UK. This approach ensures a comprehensive evaluation of existing government strategies. Furthermore, the project aspires to catalyse societal transformation by challenging conventional notions of the role of Vocal and Instrumental Music Learning (VIML) in fostering creativity. It prompts a critical reassessment of the responsibilities held by teachers, students, policymakers, and examination boards, emphasizing their unique contributions in promoting and enriching creativity within the realm of music education.
