356 - Improving at-home medical abortion experience with a digitally enabled AI chatbot: A scoping study
What this challenge is about
Patient feedback and research, including from OU (Hoggart, 2023) emphasise the need for enhancements in the home abortion experience. UK medical abortion services have largely shifted to telemedicine since COVID. At BPAS, approximately 50,000 women a year receive abortion pills by mail and self-manage the process. Up to 50% require assistance during the abortion, often for procedural or symptom queries. Nurse-staffed telephone support lines face bottlenecks due to increased demand, causing dissatisfaction and reliance on emergency services. A digital solution to handle common inquiries could free resources for urgent cases, ensure timely care, and reduce wider health sector burdens.
