359 - An investigation into the impact of online-media exposure of familial crimes on children

What this challenge is about

We work with children whose family members have committed criminal offences, and have noticed an increase in offences being documented in online media. There is limited research on how exposure to such coverage impacts children psychologically and we are unsure how to safely address this issue with children to avoid further traumatisation. The accessibility and permanence of online content make it crucial to understand its effects on children’s wellbeing, future life opportunities and community connections. By gaining a better understanding, we hope to develop resources, inform professional practice and better support children to process trauma and build their resilience.
