385 - ⵜⴰⵖⵓⵔⴰⵔⵜ - A Collaborative Photography Project Investigating the Impact of Climate Change on the Amazigh Women of Aoufous Morocco

What this challenge is about

This project uses photography to explore how climate change is affecting Amazigh women living in rural Morocco. In November 2022, researchers and Indigenous women in Aoufous, a desert village in the Errachidia Province, worked together in workshops where the women took photos to tell their own stories. These images reveal how climate change—especially a major wildfire in August 2020 known locally as the “burning day”—has deeply affected their land and daily lives.

The women’s photographs were published in a book called ⵜⴰⵖⵓⵔⴰⵔⵜ [Desertification]. Through this visual storytelling, they propose reviving their local women’s cooperative as a way to tackle climate challenges in their community.

The project was supported by an Emerald Publishing grant that encourages real-world impact through research and collaboration. Moving forward, the team aims to help connect the women with NGOs and charities in Morocco to support the cooperative and build a wider network focused on gender, Indigenous rights, and climate action.
